A s h e r  K u r t z

In short...

I love making sounds.

Imperfect, crunchy, lush, wide, beautiful, ugly,

immersive, new, digital, nostalgic, analog, LOUD or soft as a whisper sounds....

I love connecting with people through creating things, and all things relating to the how and why of the our world and outerspace.

(this is a long and personal version of a bio)

I'm from Dallas, Texas, I went to school at Berklee College of Music for Film Scoring and Jazz Guitar Performance, and now live in Queens, New York. I play guitar with a number of different artists and engineer, produce, and mix records.

Some select important moments in music for me have been playing in the SNL House Band lead by Lenny Pickett, London Jazz Festival at The Barbican with Dawn Richard & Spencer Zahn, Lincoln Center with Raquel Acevedo Klein, The Lotos Festival with Terri Lyne Carrington, James Genus, Gretchen Parlato, Aaron Parks, and Tia Fuller, and touring with Kevin Garrett on Synth Bass, Keys and Guitar opening for Banks, and spending weeks at Dreamland Studios recording with Adrian Simon and the incredible cast of musicians assembled for those sessions.

I started playing guitar at the age of 7 under the guidance of the wonderful and patient Claire Greer. She taught me to read music, use my ear to figure things out, and showed me proper technique (& why the guidelines of guitar technique exist!) I've had a few very important teachers like ROGER BOYKIN, CLINT STRONG, DAVID TRONZO, MICK GOODRICK, and JULIAN LAGE but without CLAIRE, I wouldn't love making music as much as I do now. More about my other teachers later.

My mom was always active in seeking out opportunities for me (for which I am very privileged and grateful. After seeing my deep interest in music this eventually lead us to Booker T Washington High School where I was given the opportunity to study music as part of my high school curriculum. I had some very important instructors here such as Kent Ellingson who taught me Music Theory and showed me tons of amazing music, and Roger Boykin who showed me a ton about musicality and feel. During this time I was also introduced to country guitar legend, Clint Strong. Clint is truly a bebop guitar player at heart and was so incredibly generous with his time. Without Clint I truly wouldn't be where I am today in my career as a professional musician. Our lessons would consist of 4 hour hangs including dinner, album listens, story telling, and of course tons of playing and learning songs. Clint is a one of a kind human being and player.

After graduating Booker T. I had the opportunity to study in Boston at Berklee College of Music. Mick Goodrick was the teacher I initially sought out, and learned a great deal from (Rest in Power doctor Goodrick). Mick was incredible but the teacher I'd credit as the most influential on me in my time at Berklee was David Tronzo. Tronz really gave me permission not to ask for permission in a time where I was feeling deeply constricted by Jazz pedagogy. He taught me so much about being my truest self as an improviser, and cared so much about helping me say what I really wanted to say musically.
